Further information

There is extra information that it is important to keep in mind for your volunteering journey so we have created this section to make things easier for you.

FLIGHT TICKETS

The volunteers are responsible for the booking of their own flight. We recommend flying to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)or either the Arusha Airport as it is closer to our location but you might also consider flying to Dar es Salaam (DAR) and take a bus directly to Arusha city where we will come and pick you up to the host family.

The duration of your stay is not limited, you can stay as long as you like depending on your budget. We have no specific dates for volunteering so you should contact us prior your arrival to arrange your program for you.

VISA

It is compulsory to have a visa for entering the country, so we advise you ask for the Tourist Visa fee in the airport once you arrive in Tanzania and the cost is 50 USD. We can write for you an invitation letter if the airport staff asks for information about the accommodation during your travel as well.

If you prefer, you can also ask for the online visa with the following link https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/ .

VACCINATIONS

The required vaccinations for entering to the country can vary depending on the current situation of Tanzania. However, you should ask in your local vaccination center for trustful information so that they can provide you the medication needed.

Usually those include the Covid – 19, Yellow Fever, Malaria pills, Typhoid Fever, Hepatits A and B, Meningitis, Cholera, Tetanus and others that may be present at the time of your travel so you should contact your doctor for the information. The prices vary depending on the number of vaccinations applied.

DOCUMENTATION

  • Passport: the expiration date must be at least 6 month before your arrival in Tanzania.
  • Vaccination card: as we explained before it is very important to have the required vaccinations to prevent any unexpected health problems so it is advisable to have the record of your previous vaccines if the government asks for it.
  • Travel insurance: it is recommendable to book a travel insurance to cover any kind of robbery, health problems, lost baggage, etc to make your travel more safe. The price may vary depending on the choice of the company and the included items. This is totally up to you so you might skip this if you cannot afford this service.

TRANSPORT

AIRPORT TRANSPORT: you have three options avaliable for you depending on your budget.

  • Private transport: a taxi will come and pick you up from the airport directly to your homestay for a price of 30 USD per person.
  • Shuttle bus: the airport offers the passengers the option to take a bus to the Arusha Bus station where we will come and pick you up to your home place for a price of 15 USD. Please contact us before your arrival so that we can arrange the transport for you.
  • Dalla-Dalla: this is the cheapest transport avaliable. It is the local public transport of Tanzania and it carries up to 15 passengers so it may be a little bit less comfortable but this is totally up to you. The price is less than 1 USD and it is advisable to pay in Tanzanian shillings to the drivers.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: there are two options available, the Dalla-Dalla (mini bus) which costs 700/=TZS (0.25 USD) and the Pikipiki/BodaBoda (private motorbike) which the fees range from 1 USD and above depending on the destination. The motorbike can sometimes carry up to two people at the same time so expenses can be reduced.

OTHER TRANSPORT: if you would like to arrange any touristic trip during your leisure time you can either use the public transport or take a taxi depending on the money you want to spend and the destination. We can also provide you if needed the transport fees for the safari trips to the neighbouring National Parks.

MEDICATION

The first aid kid essentials are the following:

  • Antibacterial drugs
  • Band-aids
  • Antihistamines medication for allergic reactions
  • Analgesic drugs such as ibuprofen or paracetamol
  • Oral solution for re-hydration in the case of suffering from diarrhea
  • Antidiarrhoeal drugs
  • Pain killers
  • Malaria pills
  • Insect bite repellent
  • Motion-sickness medication
  • Digital thermometer
  • Disinfectants
  • Suncream
  • Sticking-plasters
  • Water purification tablets

We recommend visiting your doctor for any further medication. You have to know that if you need to go to the hospital it is better to go to the private service such as the Arusha Lutheran Medical Center, St. Thomas hospital, the AICC Hospital, the Aghakan hospital etc, However the organization will help you to take you to the hospital at any time if you have an emergency.

CURRENCY

The local currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSH) but USD is also accepted for the touristic places as well. We recommend using shillings for the local markets and transport as well as daily expenses such as internet, airtime and others.

You can change dollars to shillings in the National Bank of Arusha but keep in mind that the exchange rates vary depending on the bills, for instance 100 USD bills are more valuable than two bills of 50 USD and 10 USD so it is advisable to have the highest ones.

You can check the conversion rates of your local currency to USD and TSH online through the Bank of Tanzania website: https://www.bot.go.tz/ .

INTERNET

We recommend you to buy a new SIM card, so this means that you will have a new Tanzanian number for local calls to keep in touch with Tanzanian people during your stay.

In this way, you can buy internet for your device by purchasing vouchers for daily, weekly or either monthly internet depending on your needs. The prices for weekly internet bando are:

  • 10 GB→ 30000 TSH / 15 USD
  • 5 GB → 15000 TSH / 7.5 USD
  • 2 GB → 10000 TSH / 5 USD
  • 800 MB → 5000 TSH / 2.5 USD
  • 500 MB → 3000 TSH / 1.5 USD

We recommend using the Vodacom service provider as they offer the cheapest rates and the internet works very effciently in all the places even the sorroundings of Arusha and in Zanzibar too.

WHAT TO PACK

You should be aware that Arusha’s weather is quite colder than the rest of Tanzania because of the northen location. For this reason it is advisable to pack more warm clothes than summer clothes for your comfort as well as good shoes for trecking due to high amount of dust in the streets. The host family will not provide your personal toiletries and towels so you might bring whatever you will need for personal hygiene during your stay.

We also recommend bringing raincoats and a swimming costumes if you decide to travel to Zanzibar or to the Hot springs.
